The Roman Catholic parish church Hofstetten-Grünau is located in Grünau in the market town of Hofstetten-Grünau in Lower Austria . The parish church of St. Georg , incorporated into the Göttweig Abbey, belongs to the Lilienfeld dean's office in the diocese of St. Pölten . The parish church and the partially preserved churchyard wall are under monument protection .

history

The church was officially founded at the beginning of the 12th century by the high freed from Hofstetten. In 1110 the church was spun off from the Kilb parish and in 1310 elevated to a parish church. In 1323/1332 the church was incorporated into the Göttweig monastery. The Romanesque hall building was extended in the late Gothic style to a three-aisled church with a heavily raised choir. The tower is from the 14th century. In the 18th century the nave was redesigned in Baroque style. 1956 to 1958 was a restoration.

architecture

The late Gothic extension of the Romanesque hall church included in particular the addition of the side aisles and the extremely high choir , which almost reaches the height of the tower. The nave has four bays, with the flat ceiling of the central nave being preserved. The ceiling painting of the Assumption and King David and St. Cäcilia in the nave was created by the painter Sepp Zöchling (1957). The triumphal arch, undercut by the nave ceiling, forms the transition to the single-bay choir, which has a 5/8 end and is spanned by a high ribbed vault with coats of arms .

Furnishing

The high altar dates from the Baroque period of the interior in the 18th century. The altarpiece shows St. Georg fighting the dragon and was created by Martin Johann Schmidt (known as Kremser Schmidt ) in 1757. The picture is accompanied on both sides by the 19th century statues of St. Leonhard and St. Florian .
