The parish church Markthof is in the west of the town of Markthof in the market town of Engelhartstetten in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. George belongs to the Marchfeld deanery in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

Before 1400 a vicariate was mentioned. In 1677 a parish was named and rebuilt in 1784.

Originally, as a fortified church, the church was a medieval part of a fortification. The small, essentially Romanesque church has a compact tower from the 13th century in the northeast. The church was rebuilt and expanded in baroque style in the 17th century and 1766 .

architecture

The nave with a Romanesque core structure with a baroque side aisle-like extension from the 18th century in the north shows strong buttresses on the west side. The church has a round window above the walled-in round-arched west portal and otherwise shows baroque segmented arched windows. The retracted baroque choir was built in the 17th century. The three-storey tower, which is essentially Romanesque, shows exposed Romanesque ashlar masonry on the ground floor area, with loopholes above it, the bell storey with double acoustic windows has a pointed helmet.

The interior of the church appears as a two-bay nave under a barrel vault with stitch caps over straps on flat wall templates. The north aisle has a flat ceiling. The three-part organ gallery stands on pillars. The squat triumphal arch is narrow. The one-yoke choir with a five-eighth section has a groin vault between belts and at the end with stitch caps.

Furnishing

The remarkably richly structured baroque high altar from 1742 has a tabernacle with adoring angels in the center and above it an exposure niche with a small crucifix and shows the reliefs of the Sacrifice of Isaac , the miraculous multiplication of bread , and the crowning figure of St. George.

Franz Ullmann built the organ in 1852.

Friedrich von Prankh zu Hoff on March 1593 names a red marble heraldic tombstone .
