history

The church was initially a branch church of the former parish church in today's Gloggnitz Castle and was incorporated into the Formbach Abbey. Payerbach became a separate parish in 1379. In 1446 the church was destroyed and in 1447 it was officially restored and rededicated.

The west and north walls of the nave contain a Romanesque core from the 12th century. The choir and the southern sacristy are from the 14th century. The extension of the nave to the south and the tower were built in the second half of the 15th century, around 1525 the nave was vaulted. In the 18th century an oratorio was added to the southern sacristy. In 1828 a new sacristy with an oratory on the upper floor was added to the north, and a portal porch was added to the west. In 1970 the interior of the church was restored and the neo-Gothic furnishings were removed. In 1973 the outside of the church was restored.

architecture

The two-aisled late Gothic hall church has a south-west tower.

The undivided nave under a steep pitched roof has pointed arch windows and shows a painted late Gothic window frame with a finial to the south, a window to the north shows the remainder of 1817. To the south there is a walled up late Gothic beveled rectangular portal.

The recessed choir of the same height under a hipped roof has simply stepped buttresses and pointed arched windows. In the northern corner of the choir is the two-storey elongated sacristy extension (1928) which ends in a semicircle to the east. In the southern corner of the choir is the two-storey former almost square sacristy extension under a pent roof and a staircase facing south (1928).

The massive tower cuts into the south-west corner of the nave, has a base and four storeys, coffee cornices and rectangular windows and pointed-arch sound windows beveled on all sides and carries a tent roof.
