Vornbach am Inn monastery

The Vornbach Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey in Vornbach , community Neuhaus am Inn , Bavaria , in the Diocese of Passau .

history

The monastery consecrated to Saint Mary and Saint Benedict was established as a collegiate monastery by Countess Himiltrud von Vornbach before 1050 and converted into a Benedictine monastery in 1094 by Count Ekbert I von Formbach and his wife Mathilde von Lambach - Pitten and Count Ulrich von Windberg. All four donors come from the family of the Counts von Formbach .

Bishop Ulrich I of Passau consecrated the Benedictine monk Berengar († October 29, 1108) as the first abbot of the monastery.

former abbey church

Around 1125 a late Romanesque double-towered basilica was built in place of a castle . From the middle of the 12th century to the late Gothic period , the abbey housed an important writing school. An artistically painted Bible was created here in 1421. The abbey church received a new choir in the 14th century .

In 1438, a severe flood of the Inn undermined a monastery wing, which then collapsed. Several people, including the abbot at the time, were swept away by the floods, but were rescued a few kilometers downstream.

Today's baroque church was built under Abbot Benedikt Hepauer from 1630 to 1637, including the Romanesque enclosing walls and the Gothic choir. The two-story abbey buildings were built around 1700. Under Abbot Clarus, the church received its late Baroque interior from 1728 to 1733.

The Benedictine abbey was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization in Bavaria , the monastery church took over the function of a parish church in 1806. The Austrian possessions of the monastery fell to the state. The monastery buildings were acquired by Franz X. Bachmayr, and in 1857 they came into the possession of Baron von Schätzler. The north-eastern courtyard serves as a vicarage.

The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Mary is the mother church of the Assumption of Mary Church in Neunkirchen in Austria .

Interior of the monastery church

The facade of the double-towered church was built between 1765 and 1770 by the Passau master builder Johann Michael Schneitmann . Inside, there are four semicircular niche chapels. In the 20th century, the changes made in the 19th century, in particular the replacement of the wall stucco by Franz Josef Holzinger with ornament painting, were reversed. The fresco painting, which mainly depicts scenes from the life of Mary and in the choir of Satan's fall, comes from Innocent Anton Warathy . The high altar by Holzinger from 1730 bears a picture by Bartolomeo Altomonte , which shows the Assumption of Mary .

As a result of frequent explosions in the nearby quarry, the church got a longitudinal ceiling crack, which was pulled together again in 1962 by large iron bars.

organ

The organ was created by Johann Ignaz Egedacher in 1732. It was restored in 2009 by Orgelbau Kuhn . The instrument has 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical. A special feature is the still functioning Kalkanten plant .

Miraculous image

In the first rear chapel on the left side of the church there is a carved figure of Mary with the child from around 1475. This miraculous image comes from the pilgrimage church “Maria am Sand”, which stood south of the abbey.

Former parish church

The former parish church of Vornbach was dedicated to St. Martin . After the secularization, the parish rights were transferred to the former monastery church. In 1826 the church was demolished except for the presbytery , and this subsequently served as a cemetery chapel and mortuary. In 1975, during restoration work, frescoes from the 15th century were discovered and partially exposed.

"Maria am Sand"

The pilgrimage church "Maria am Sand" was the oldest church in town. Even before the monastery was founded in 1094, there was an important pilgrimage here. The church, decorated with rich stucco by Franz Xaver Holzinger, was demolished after the secularization in 1831. The miraculous image was transferred to the former monastery church.
