Parish church hl. James

The parish church of St. Jakobus the Elder is a Roman Catholic church in the Lower Austrian municipality of Sitzenberg-Reidling and was built at the beginning of the 19th century.

It is located in the southeast of the village on a terrain step. To the south is the cemetery and to the north, at the foot of the church hill, is the baroque rectory, which was built in 1785.

Parish history

The landlord Mathilde von Reidling and her son founded a benefit around 1200 , with the parish rights held by the Augustinian Canons of Herzogenburg . Presumably, Reidling became an independent parish in 1343. In 1387 it is documented as a parish.

Parish church

The parish church was built from 1802 to 1806 according to plans by the Viennese court architect Johann Nepomuk Amann , who is considered to be one of the main representatives of the sober classical architecture of the first quarter of the 19th century in Austria. Most of the building material came from the former Hasendorf Castle.

description

The remarkable, strictly classical-style building is aligned in an east-west axis and has a uniform facade with flat plaster band structure and high recessed arched windows. The retracted choir with 5/8 end and arched windows is in the east. The west facade with a set tower, triangular gable and main portal is divided into two storeys and three zones. The Herzogenburg monastery coat of arms and a stone relief with the theme "Adoration of the Most Holy Altar Sacrament" are located above the portal.

The nave is three-bay , the middle one has a square floor plan and the ceiling fresco is the work of the Maulbertsch student Anton Spreng .

The furnishings are uniformly classical. The high altar with a double column retable (dated 1812) is made of Salzburg marble . The altarpiece, flanked by the statues of St. Peter and Paul, represents the sermon of St. Jakobus and was painted by the Kremser Schmidt pupil Johann Wetzl (1767–1831) from Tulln .
