The parish church Säusenstein , also called Kleinsonntagsberg , stands at a high altitude that can be seen from afar on a church hill sloping on all sides in Säusenstein in the municipality of Ybbs an der Donau in the Melk district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Donatus belongs to the deanery of Ybbs in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the former mountain complex are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

Probably in the 12th century a small own church of the cathedral bailiffs of Regensburg was founded as St. Lorenz bei Gottsdorf and in 1334 that of Eberhard III. Säusenstein Monastery founded by Wallsee is incorporated. The former Hausberganlage Kleinsonntagsberg consisted of the main plant on the Kirchenberg with two upstream farms to the west in the direction of the Danube , whereby the western farm was used as a tabor in 1473 .

A previous medieval building was badly damaged by lightning in 1747 and then demolished. From 1765, under the prior Father Raimund Fröhlich, the new church was built, including the remains of the tower, in 1766 the church was vaulted, in 1767 the painting began, in 1771 the tower was completed and in 1777 the facade sculptures were placed.

The church was elevated to a parish church in 1783 and executed in 1787. After the abolition of the monastery in 1789, the collegiate church was elevated to a parish church. After a fire in 1801, the parish rights were transferred back to the Donatuskirche. In 1809 the church was sacked by the French. The church was restored in 1955/1956 and 1996/1998.

architecture

The late baroque church building under hipped roofs with a centralized, steeply proportioned nave building with a west tower facade and a rectangular choir has a uniform late baroque interior.

The interior of the church is white-light green-ocher with stucco decoration by Wilhelm Kirschner and Andreas Stolz around 1770. Johann Wenzel Bergl created the ornamental and figural ceiling paintings and Josef Krinner created the architectural paintings in 1767.

Furnishing

The high altar around 1765/1767 is placed completely filling in the chancel, it has on the side pilasters and with mighty free columns with composite capitals the cornice, further entablature pieces with explosive gables, on it curtain-holding angel statues and a crown and on the east wall a beam glory with Holy Spirit Dove and angel heads. The high altar shows the altar sheet Glory of St. Donatus, painted by Paul Troger in 1746, and carries the statues of the martyrs (weather saints) John and Paul .

The organ built by Peter Hötzel in 1809 was rebuilt in 1956. Two bells were made around 1920. Two bells were cast by the Grassmayr bell foundry in 1977.
