history

The first church was built around 1150 under Liutold von Gutenberg and mentioned in a document in 1170. From 1245 the church belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg and in 1260 went to the Teutonic Order . After the church passed into the possession of Johann Maximilian Herberstein, an Augustinian hermit monastery was founded in 1652 , which was closed again in 1820. The church next to the monastery was rebuilt in 1655 based on a design by the architect Anton Solar and the builder Michael Arhan. In 1953 the church and the monastery were handed over to the Capuchin Order. In 1979 the interior was restored.

architecture

The church was built on a foothill of the Kulm mountain , above the Feistritz river near Herberstein Castle, visible from afar. The high three-bay nave has a groin vault and belts on a wall structure with Ionic pilasters on plinths and a strong, surrounding cornice. Lunette windows protrude into the vault area. The retracted choir has a 3/8 end, the sacristy is decorated with a fresco program by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer from 1730.

Several figural Roman stones from the 1st to the 3rd century are attached to the outside of the choir and the surrounding walls.
