Parish church of St. Georgen am Sandhof
The parish church of St. Georgen am Sandhof is in the town of Sankt Georgen am Sandhof in the municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Carinthia . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. George belongs to the dean's office of Klagenfurt-Stadt in the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).
history
In a document the church was mentioned in 1216 as belonging to the provost Maria Saal .
architecture
The church, essentially from the 14th century, with a Gothic choir from the first half of the 14th century, was expanded into a baroque hall church. The church is surrounded by a cemetery. The core of the tall tower is from the 12th century. The church is partly covered with stone slabs.
The Gothic choir shows itself with two-tier buttresses and tracery windows. The tower has Romanesque double windows and a pointed gable helmet. To the west there is an open vestibule with a northern pillar, walled up in the pillar is a grave relief depicting Kantharos with a servant from the end of the first century. To the right of the west portal is a Roman period plate with a simple frame and no recognizable inscription. In the outer wall of the choir is a small fragment of pilaster with a flower and tendril ornament from the middle of the second century.
Furnishing
The high altar around 1740 bears the figure of St. George on horseback flanked by the hll. Sebastian and Florian.
The side altars around 1750 bear the figure of Maria Immaculata around 1700 on the left and the baroque shrine figure of St. Martin from the first half of the 18th century.
