history

A church was documented in 1281 and a parish in 1326. Around 1667 the church was rebuilt. In 1682 the church was rebuilt, probably according to the plans of the master mason Hans Hochhaltinger. The former pilgrimage church is incorporated into Altenburg Abbey.

architecture

The baroque basilica church building stands on the south side on Gothic foundation walls. The choir, which is slightly drawn in towards the central nave, has a triangular closure and extensions on both sides. The Gothic tower stands in the east of the south aisle.

The exterior of the church shows itself on the facades with a pilaster structure and with superimposed arched windows on the central nave and on the side aisles. The arched window and the middle high main portal have stone walls and a straight profiled roof, in the lintel area there is a decor with Altenburg roses. The lower choir has sacristies under shed roofs to the side. The Gothic tower in the basement shows notch openings and chamfered, profiled stone-walled windows, the baroque structure with baluster windows and clock gables has a bell helmet from 1839. The tower portal is a baroque skylight portal.

The interior of the church shows itself with a central nave under a needle cap barrel, with three normal yokes and to the east with a shortened yoke, all in all opened laterally via basket arch arcades into side aisle-like insert chapels, above the insert chapels there are galleries on both sides. A narrow west gallery connects the side galleries. The triumphal arch is rounded. The three-bay groin-vaulted choir is raised by one step, on each side of the choir a sacristy portal with stone walls with a two-bay groin-vaulted sacristy.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1685/1687 in rich gilded acanthus frame has sacrificial portals with scale pilasters.

The organ was built by Johann M. Kauffmann (1886).
