The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. George - incorporated into Melk Abbey - belongs to the Hollabrunn dean's office in the Archdiocese of Vienna . history

The parish is considered the mother parish of the middle Weinviertel . The church was consecrated in 1108. 1113 the parish was by Leopold III. Donated to Melk Abbey and incorporated in 1348.

The construction of the new church in the third and fourth decade of the 18th century was documented by Jakob Prandtauer in 1725 , the design was attributed to him, and in a document by Franz Munggenast in 1733, Franz Munggenast was involved in the construction of the church and has probably completed the construction. After a fire in 1822, renovation work began in 1835. In 1864/1865 the church received the facade towers according to the plans of the master builder Franz Schlierholz. In 1967 the church was restored inside and 1978/1979 outside.

architecture

The parish church stands on the hill to the east of the market. The churchyard is cordoned off from the market square below by the former town hall and school. The churchyard is accessed through an axial staircase with a portal and a passage in the town hall building, the former Benefiziatenstöckl.

The outside of the church shows a mighty baroque basilica gallery church with a gable front that was extended in the 19th century as a double tower facade. The core of the choir is Gothic. The church was a fortified church and is surrounded by a former fortified churchyard wall.

Furnishing

The marbled interior with white figures was created in the 1840s.

The organ was built by Johann Hencke in 1744. It has a small, staggered, decorated case with the image of the Annunciation . The parapet positive is designed like the organ. The organ was later changed several times.
