Zienitzen - Parish Church of St Georg.JPG

The Roman Catholic parish church of Zienitzen is dedicated to St. George and stands on a hill on the right bank of the Metnitz in the Metnitztal in the municipality of Friesach . Zienitzen was originally a branch of Grades and was first mentioned as a parish in 1404. The pastor of Metnitz held the right of patronage until the end of the 16th century . It then passed to the Bishop of Gurk, who also exercised the bailiwick rights through the episcopal rule of Grades . In 1814 Zienitzen was united with St. Salvator, but shortly afterwards it became independent again.

Building description

The church is a Gothic building from the 14th and 15th centuries with a flat-roofed nave and a single -bay , ridge-vaulted choir with five-eighth end and two-tier buttresses . There is a vaulted ossuary under the choir . A Gothic sacristy is added to the north of the choir and a Baroque sacristy to the south . The west tower with a ridge-vaulted tower hall and a younger porch is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. A bell was cast by Merth von Friesach in 1476. You enter the church from the west through a simply profiled pointed arch portal.

Inside there are remains of wall paintings from the beginning of the 15th century on the north wall of the choir. The coronation of Mary , three saints, the Man of Sorrows , St. George and a coat of arms are shown. The stained glass in the end of the choir window was created in the middle of the 14th century in the Judenburg workshop and shows the Ascension and Resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as the head of Christ in the tracery .

Furnishing

The high altar with richly ornamented sacrificial portals shows Saint George on the altar sheet and bears the figures of Saints Valentin , Franz Xaver , Johannes Nepomuk and Florian . The relief from the first half of the 18th century on the antependium depicts St. George.

The two side altars from 1686 consist of an aedicula on a small base and a split segment gable with a small aedicule as an attachment. The left altar bears a Madonna figure and shows Saint Joseph in the top picture . On the right altar there are pictures of Saint Sebastian and Martin .
