In the Middle Ages and early modern times, a farm yard of a monastery (or cathedral chapter ), which was located in a larger settlement - usually a town - was referred to as a nursing yard (also town yard , town house or monastery courtyard ) . Foster farms served as bases for handling legal and other business with the city and its population, for example for trading in products from the monastery, or as tithe farms for collecting taxes that the monastery received from the city. There were also representative functions. Occasionally chapels , hospitals or inns were also part of the buildings.
