action

1958: A serious accident occurs in a dragster race . Two cars have collided at high speed and are on fire. One of the drivers remained conscious and is now trying his brother to save the driver of the other car. But a huge explosion tears the trapped teenager to pieces and inflicts severe burns on the other. He escapes from the hospital and hides in the recently closed movie theater "Ritz".

Today: Ed Blake in his mid-forties bought the now dilapidated and neglected cinema and intends to convert it into a nostalgic dance palace in the style of the 1950s. He sees the company as a kind of therapy for his very pronounced midlife crisis . He is supported by his partner Nancy, her shrill girlfriend Sally, who is responsible for various secretarial work, and the eloquent colored bodybuilder Marcus, who is supposed to be responsible for safety.

At the same time, Inspector Lassarde is tasked with investigating a series of murders that have been committed in the immediate vicinity of the "Ritz" for decades. The acts of violence increase particularly strongly when an entrepreneur tries to repair the "Ritz". In fact, more crimes are not long in coming, a worker is brutally killed and Sally is abducted by a huge black figure.

Blake only noticed all of this in passing, as he is so absorbed in the preparations for the upcoming reopening of the "Ritz". He doesn't even notice that Nancy, frustrated by not paying any more attention to her, is starting a fuss with an Elvis Presley impersonator he has booked for his opening party. Inspector Lassarde now suspects Ed Blake to be the killer, since two other dead, a teenage couple, have been found. However, due to a lack of evidence, there was no arrest.

The following evening, in the middle of a performance by The Coasters with their old hit "Yakkity Yak", Nancy is kidnapped by the gigantic stranger. The horribly disfigured giant brings her to his hiding place under the basement of the "Ritz", where he also keeps Sally prisoner. There she learns of his fate and that his monstrous figure goes back to steroids , which he used to treat the pain of the burns and on which he is addicted to this day. He fell in love with Nancy after hearing her beautiful singing while planning the renovation.

But when she rejects his feelings, he gets mad. At the last second, Ed, Lassarde, Marcus and a police SWAT team reach the hiding place of the gigantic stranger and are barely able to prevent the worst. A bloody showdown sets in as a result of which a fire breaks out, to which the whole "Ritz" falls victim. Nancy and Sally are saved and the "Phantom of the Ritz" dies in the flames.
