Phayao ( Thai : พะเยา ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง พะเยา ) in the Phayao province of Thailand . It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Phayao and the province Phayao. The Phayao Province is located in the northern region of Thailand .

geography

The city is located between Lampang and Chiang Rai in the midst of an imposing mountain landscape on a six kilometer long and four kilometer wide lake, the Kwan Phayao .

history

Founded in the 11th century, Phayao was briefly the capital of a small kingdom that came to Lan Na in 1338 .

Importance and Economy

Phayao is hardly developed for tourism, this area is too remote.

Attractions

  • Wat Sri Khom Kham ( Thai : วัด ศรี โคม คำ ) - temple directly on the lake with a Buddha statue that is said to be over 500 years old and is called Phra Chao Ton Luang ( พระเจ้า ตน หลวง ) by the locals . It is 17 m high, making it the largest Buddha statue in Lan Na . It was built of bricks and covered with gold, and legend has it that it took 33 years to complete. The viharn in which the statue is housed is from more recent times; it used to be in the open air by the lake. Every year in May a big temple festival is celebrated here.
