Phellinas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phellinas ( Greek  Φελλίνας ) was an ancient sculptor from Temenothyrai in Phrygia , who worked in Dokimeion and his hometown in the 3rd century .

Phellinas is known from an inscription on a tombstone that was found in Temenothyrai and is now in the Izmir Archaeological Museum . He signed his ethnicon on the stone , which is why his origin is considered certain. Stylistically, the tombstone corresponds to the door stele widespread in Phrygia , with the details of the door stones from Dokimeion. He must therefore have learned his trade in Dokimeion, where important marble quarries were located. With the knowledge he gained there, he returned to his hometown. The only West Phrygian element of the tombstone is the Tabula ansata , which also bears the inscription.

In research, the tombstone is considered evidence of both the wandering activity of the sculptors of this time and of the supraregional importance of the Docimean Bidhauer tradition. According to an incorrect reading of the inscription, the stone was dated to the year 279 for a long time. The dating was corrected to the year 232/233, which also corresponds to the typological development of the door stones from Dokimeion.
