Dokimeion
Dokimeion ( Greek Δοκίμειον, Δοκίμιον ; Latin Docimium ) was an ancient Hellenistic and Roman city in the Phrygia region of Asia Minor . Its ruins are near İscehisar ( Afyonkarahisar Province ) in what is now Turkey .
For three surviving epigrams show that the city was founded by a Docimus, which is in all likelihood to the Macedonian commander of that name is, the end of the 4th century BC as a subordinate of Antigonus Monophthalmos in Synnada had ruled, which was only a short distance from Dokimeion. This makes it one of the oldest Hellenistic city foundations in the interior of Asia Minor. Apparently Dokimos had founded his city as a military settlement for Macedonian warriors, which among other things suggest coins on whose inscriptions the city is described with the addition "the Macedonians" ( ΔΟΚΙΜΕΩΝ ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ Dokimeion Makedonon ). The Cybele cult was very pronounced here.
Apparently Dokimeion did not grow beyond the level of a small town until the Roman period, Strabo called it a "village" ( Δοκιμία κώμη Dokimia kōme ), but it was also known to him because of its nearby stone quarries of Synnadic marble . The city still existed in late antique times ( Δοκίμιον Dokimion ) and was the seat of a Christian bishop. Since 1914 there has been a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church under the Latin name Docimium .
