Phil Bloom (1968)

Phil Bloom (born November 27, 1945 in Berkel en Rodenrijs ) is a Dutch artist .

Life

Education

Phil Bloom began studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague in 1965 , but switched to the Free Academy in The Hague after a year . From 1967 to 1974 she studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam . At the beginning of her career she created drawings for the student magazine Propria Cures and credits for films. Around her thirtieth birthday, she moved to New York for five years and then lived in India for several years .

"Hoepla"

In the mid-sixties, Phil Bloom was accepted into the artist movement Fluxus , which at that time was regarded as highly alternative. Fluxus wanted to break up the “bourgeois narrow-mindedness” of society and used Phil as a “crowbar”.

On October 9, 1967, Phil Bloom, then 21, appeared naked on the VPRO television program Hoepla , which was the first time she was completely naked on Dutch television. The appearance led to great excitement and even parliamentary questions in the Second Chamber . Phil Bloom was also noticed by the international press. It was a reason for Playboy magazine to publish an interview with her in the October 1968 issue under the title TV's first nude .

Phil Bloom had already had himself photographed for a nude photo in front of the Het Lieverdje am Spui in Amsterdam in 1967 . In 1968 she also played naked in the less successful film Professor Columbus together with Jeroen Krabbé as the hippie king . After that, she'd had enough of the public eye for her nakedness. She was still litigating in the 1970s to prevent a publisher from marketing her pictures.

In April 2000, Libelle magazine published an interview in which Phil Bloom said of her appearance on the Hoepla program:

“Here in Antwerp I am respected and I don't get the stamp of a minute naked on TV. Basically, I never suffered from this incident, I still stand up for it. But in the Netherlands they don't give you a chance to show that you are no longer the girl you used to be. It must finally be understood that reading the newspaper is not the only thing I can do. "
