Phil Monckton

John Philip "Phil" Monckton (born April 8, 1952 in Saint-Boniface , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian rower .

The 1.96 m tall Monckton finished eighth at the 1975 World Championships with the Canadian eighth . The next year he switched to the four without a helmsman together with Ian Gordon . Together with Brian Dick and Andrew van Ruyven , Gordon and Monckton finished fifth at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. The four Canadians also achieved fifth place at the 1977 World Championships . At the Pan American Games in 1979 Monckton started in the single and won the silver medal behind the Argentine Ricardo Ibarra and in front of James Dietz from the United States.

After the Olympic boycott in 1980 , Monckton appeared again internationally in 1983. At the 1983 World Championships , Doug Hamilton , Mike Hughes , Phil Monckton and Bruce Ford took fourth place behind the two German boats from West and East and the Italians. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the four Canadians took third place in the second run behind the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany and the Italians. After winning the repechage, the Canadians finished third behind the Germans and the Australians in the final.

The graduate of the University of Western Ontario returned to rowing in 2004 and assumed responsibility for the Canadian Association as Vice President for Competitive Sports.
