Philip Hubert Kendal Jerrold Harben (born October 17, 1906 in Fulham ; † April 27, 1970 ) was a British chef and one of the first TV chefs.

Life

Harben was born in Fulham in 1906 and attended Highgate School. His mother was the stage actress Mary Jerrold . His father Hubert Harben was a stage actor. His sister was Joan Harben . She has spoken on several BBC radio productions.

His first job was as a commercial photographer, after which he took over the kitchen at Isobar in Hampstead . In 1940 he enlisted in the Royal Air Force , where an eye injury prevented his pilot career. Instead he was used in the army catering . From 1946 to 1951 he had a cooking program on BBC Radio and from 1946 he was on BBC TV programs. In addition, Harben published several cookbooks from 1945.

In the 1950s he had a regular column in British Woman's Own magazine. In 1958 he helped found the kitchen appliance manufacturer Harbenware .

He died in 1970 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery .
