Life

James Philip Bailey

Philip James Bailey grew up in Nottingham, where his father Thomas Bailey († 1856) edited the Nottingham Mercury . He studied law in Glasgow and became a lawyer in 1840. Bayley devoted his time mainly to poetry and in the 20th year completed his Festus (Lond. 1839, 10th ed. 1877), a lyrical and dramatic adaptation of the Faust saga , which found general approval. The poem The angel world (1850) followed eleven years later , which he combined with the Festus in later editions . But the latter as well as the poems The mystic (1855) and The universal hymn (1867) appealed to the reading world much less. In addition, the satirical work The age; politics, poetry and criticism (1858) should be mentioned. Bailey tried his hand at another area in The international policy of the great powers (1861). The poet later lived in his hometown.
