Philip Stuart Kitcher (born February 20, 1947 in London ) is a British philosopher of science .

Kitcher grew up in Eastbourne , Sussex . He studied at Cambridge and later moved to Princeton . He then taught at Vassar College , the University of Vermont , the University of Minnesota , the University of California, San Diego, and Columbia University .

First he dealt with the philosophy of mathematics , later biology . Most recently, a focus was on research into the evolution of altruism and morality and the conflict between science and religion .

Kitcher was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002, and to the American Philosophical Society in 2018 .
