Philip II of Eberstein (* 1523 ; † September 11, 1589 in Remlingen ) was Count von Eberstein, imperial councilor, supreme captain and governor in Upper Alsace.

His parents were Wilhelm IV von Eberstein (1497–1562) and his wife Johanna von Hanau-Lichtenberg (1507–1572).

Life

He went into Spanish service early on, where he was followed by his brother Otto IV (1533–1576). For his services he was appointed colonel over a regiment of German infantry by Philip of Spain as early as 1555. For this he received a salary of 1200 livres . In 1556 he also became the imperial governor and captain of Front Austria (Upper Alsace) when he had to settle a dispute between the city council of Strasbourg and the bishop of Strasbourg over the use of the minster. In 1560 he was also the emperor's envoy to the convent of Protestant princes in Naumburg .

After the death of his father, there were difficult inheritance negotiations between the heirs. Philip inherited the county, but also debts of 75,800 thalers.

In later years Philip was attacked by a mental illness that got worse and worse. Thus, on the orders of Rudolf II. Hauptrecht von Eberstein was appointed its curator. This could not take over the office because of the war in the Netherlands, because he was needed there as a Spanish colonel. The Württemberg councilor and chief magistrate from Meckmühl Christoph Landschad von Steichnach was appointed as his deputy. The power of attorney is dated December 18, 1577.

Nevertheless, Philip received Boltringen as a fief from Archduke Ferdinand in 1579. Philipp died on September 11, 1589 after a long illness.

It was of great importance to the sailors of the Murg Valley . The maritime ships had bought and rafted the wood from the manorial forests before ; so the count now sold them the entire timber trade, forests and mills for the sum of 3500 thalers. As a result, the cooperation of the Murgschiffer appeared in 1569 as landowners and was able to achieve considerable prosperity through trade.

family

He was married twice. His first wife was the two-time widow Johanna de Bailleul, Dame de Douxlieu (Anna von Donliers) († August 12, 1563) from Flanders in 1756 . The marriage remained without children. On January 20, 1564 he married his second wife, Countess Katharina von Stollberg-Wertheim (around 1535, † August 22, 1598). She was the widow of Count Michael III. von Wertheim (1529–1556). The couple had the following children:

⚭ 1601 Count Eitel Friedrich IV of Hohenzollern-Hechingen (7 September 1545 - 16 January 1605)
⚭ 1606 Johann Georg Freiherr von Königsegg , (* 1568; † August 29, 1622)

With the Agathe von Utrecht he had the daughter Anna , whom he gave 1500 thalers in his will.
