Philipp Jacob Weigel

Philipp Jacob Weigel (born January 12, 1752 in Windach , † 1826 in Kirchhofen ) was a German Benedictine monk , church musician and composer .

He worked u. a. as a church musician in the monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest .

Life

Weigel made his profession in 1791 and entered the monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest. There he was choir director from 1806. In 1815 he became a pastor in Bollschweil . He retired in 1821 and died in Kirchhofen im Breisgau in 1826.

In addition to the actual compositional work, as was customary for monastery musicians at that time, it is said that Father Philipp created pieces for music boxes and also made the rollers for the game mechanics himself.

His only work that has survived in print are 46 Variations for increasing practice for piano students and to facilitate teaching for teachers . An excerpt from it has appeared (in the arrangement for organ) on the CD Festive Music from Southwest German Benedictine monasteries on the Ars Musici label.
