Philipp Kassel
Philipp Kassel (also Philip Kassel ; born September 22, 1876 in Frankenthal (Palatinate) ; † May 25, 1959 in Philadelphia ) was a gymnast and Olympic champion for the USA in the team all-round at the Summer Games in St. Louis 1904 .
At the age of 14, Philipp Kassel emigrated with his parents, the iron caster Peter Kassel, who came from Dichtelbach near Simmern , his mother Elisabetha, nee. Maas and his sister Christina (* 1873) to the United States of America. He joined the gymnastics community in Philadelphia, where mostly German gymnasts were in the team. At the Olympic Summer Games in St. Louis in 1904, several club teams competed in the gymnastics team. In addition to the gymnastics disciplines, long jump, shot put and short-distance running were also athletic disciplines in the all-around program. The gold medal of this competition went to the Philadelphia gymnastics community with the cast of John Grieb , Anton Heida , Max Hess , Julius Lenhart , Philipp Kassel and Ernst Reckeweg . Julius Lenhart, Philipp Kassel's team-mate, was an Austrian gymnast who was not yet naturalized in the United States of America. Since he later returned to Austria, he has since been named Austria's most successful Olympic participant at summer games with two gold and one silver medal. In the team all-round competition of the gymnasts in St. Louis, the New York Gymnastics Club as a silver medal winner and the Central Gymnastics Club Chicago with the bronze medal win, two other clubs on the podium, which were also mainly occupied by German emigrants.
