Philipp Matthäus (medic, 1641)

Philipp Matthäus (also: Matthaeus ; born March 16, 1641 in Utrecht ; † May 6, 1690 ibid) was a Dutch physician.

Life

The son of Anton Matthäus (1601–1654) and Anna Pontanus had attended the Latin school in his hometown and in 1655 began studying medicine at the university in his hometown . Four years later he continued this at the University of Franeker , where he defended two disputations de Renum et vesicae calculo and de Capitis vulneribus under his uncle Philipp Matthäus . From Franeker he returned to Utrecht, received his doctorate in medicine in 1662 and in 1664 received permission to teach philosophical and medical subjects.

In 1667 he became a lecturer in medicine in Utrecht, in 1669 he became an associate professor of medicine, which position he took up on February 16, 1670 with the speech Oratio de dignitate et honore Medicorum . After the death of Joachim Frentzel (1611–1669) he became a full professor of medicine and botany, which position he held until his death. Johannes Regius (1656–1738) gave his memorial address to him, which appeared in 1690 in the program of the rector Jacob Rhenferdius (1654–1712) in Franeker.
