Philipp Matthäus (also: Phillipus Matthaeus ; * December 11, 1621 in Marburg ; † December 29, 1700 in Franeker ) was a German medic.

Life

The son of the upper court preacher of Kassel Bernhard Matthaeus (born February 18, 1588 - July 27, 1655) and his wife Elisabeth Orting had received a preparatory education and attended school in Kassel in 1639. There Johannes Combach (1585–1651) became his formative teacher in philosophy and rhetoric and Johann Peter Dauber (1598–1650) imparted an extensive knowledge of literature to him. Afterwards he continued his education in Groningen and Bremen , where Gerhardus de Neufville (1590–1648) inspired him primarily for medicine. After training in Bremen, he began studying at Franeker University in 1645 , where he heard lectures from Johannes Antonides van der Linden (1609–1664). In 1650 he received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Leiden after defending the Dissertatio de Ictero .

When he returned to Franeker, he became professor of medicine and botany the following year in the place of van der Linden, who had been appointed to Leiden. As such, he received many honorable appointments, for example as honorary professor and archiater of Friesland. He also became a member of the council and mayor of the city. Hermann Alexander Roëll gave him a memorial sermon, which was published in Franeker in 1701. His picture was engraved in copper by Johann Schotanus and provided with a Latin text.

He was married twice. His first marriage was with Johanna, the daughter of Jan Sixt and Anna Nicolai, who gave birth to two daughters. He entered into his second marriage in 1683 with Maria Hanenburgh, from which his son Bernhard Matthaeus came, who first became a law student in Franeker, later was a lieutenant in the cavalry and died childless married to a certain schoonleben. Apart from a few academic disputations, no of his own writings are known.
