Johannes Antonides van der Linden , also: Lindanus, Jan Antonides van der Linden ; (Born January 13, 1609 in Enkhuizen ; † March 5, 1664 in Leiden ) was a Dutch medic , botanist and librarian .

Life

Johannes Antonides van der Linden was the son of the doctor and principal of the Latin School Antonius Hendrikszoon van der Linden (* around 1570/1571; † February 6, 1633), and grandson of the Franeker professor Heinrich Anton Nerdenus (* February 13, 1546 Naarden; † March 14, 1614 in Franeker), who had taken the scholarly name von der Linden. He initially attended the Latin school in his hometown, came to his uncle Hermann Antonides in Naarden at the age of 10 , but moved back to Enkhuizen two years later, where he attended the school under the then principal Willem van Nieuwenhuizen. On October 23, 1625 he enrolled at the University of Leiden and initially completed studies in natural history and philosophy under Gilbert Jachaeus (1578–1628) and Franco Petri Burgersdijk .

Later he turned to medical studies, for which he attended lectures by Otto Heurnius , Ewaldus Schrevelius , Adrian van Falkenburg (1581–1650) and Adolphus Vorstius . Four years later he changed the university and moved to the University of Franeker , where he enrolled in the matriculation of the university on December 2, 1629. After some time of continued studies under Menelaus Winsemius (1591-1639), he received his doctorate on October 19, 1630 with the treatise De virulentia venerea as a doctor of medicine. In 1631 he went to Amsterdam , where he worked in his father's practice. Here he was able to continue his studies in his father's extensive library and became a good friend of Nicolaes Tulp . One of the fruits of his studies was the book De scriptis medicis libri duo. He was highly respected in Amsterdam and in 1637 became inspector of the medical college there.

In August 1639 he was appointed professor of anatomy and botany at the University of Franeker. On November 26, 1639 he gave his introductory speech De medico futuro necessariis . During his twelve-year tenure in Franeker he carried out mortuary sections , was rector of the university in 1643/1644 and became librarian in Franeker in 1648. After van der Linden had refused a call to the University of Utrecht in 1649, a renewed appointment to the University of Leiden as professor of practical medicine took place on February 9, 1651. He took up this position on March 9, 1651 and gave his introductory speech on June 17. As head of the Leiden University Clinic, he also worked with Franciscus Sylvius and took over the rectorate of the Alma Mater after the death of Albert Cyprus in 1655/1656 . Linden, a great admirer of Hippocrates and Aristotle, seems to have developed an interest in the philosophy of René Descartes in later years .

He married Helena Grondt in Amsterdam in 1634. The marriage resulted in seven children, five daughters and two sons.
