Philipp Seiler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Seiler (* before 1573; † July 26, 1623 in Marienstatt ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and the 34th abbot of Marienstatt Abbey . His abbatiat went from 1586 to 1623.

Live and act

Philipp Seiler grew up in Münstermaifeld and was the son of the citizen Hans Seiler. A first mention goes back to the year 1573: The Marienstatter monks protested against the Count von Sayn. On February 22, 1583 he is named as the abbey's master chef. On December 30, 1583, Seiler was mentioned as abbot, which means that he must have been elected beforehand.

The Count of Sayn wanted to have more and more influence in Marienstatt, which is why Abbot Philipp turned more and more to the Archbishops of Trier and Cologne.

The abbot died on July 26th 1623. His grave is in the chapter house of the abbey.

seal

In contrast to those of his predecessors, the abbot's seal is round: an abbot is shown in Kukulle . He is holding a crook in his right hand and a book in his left . Under this representation there is a coat of arms. The inscription runs around the outside: CONSIGLVM ABBA (TIS) LOCI S (ANCTAE) MA (RIAE).
