Philippe Chatrier (born February 2, 1926 in Créteil , † June 23, 2000 in Dinard ) was a French journalist, tennis player and functional .

biography

Philippe Chatrier played for the French Davis Cup team from 1948 to 1950 , of which he was captain in 1949. After his active tennis career, he became a journalist and publisher of the “Sport” and “News” sections of the Paris-Presse newspaper, and in 1953 he founded Tennis de France magazine .

From 1968 to 1973 Chatrier was Vice President of the French Tennis Federation, from 1973 to 1993 President of the national federation Fédération Française de Tennis and from 1977 to 1991 President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). After his leadership, tennis was reinstated in the program at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . In the same year, the Frenchman joined the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 1992 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Philippe Chatrier married the British tennis player Sue Partridge . After the divorce he married the French golfer Claudine Cros.

The Center Court of the French Open in the Stade Roland Garros was renamed “Court Philippe Chatrier” in 2001.
