Philippe Gaspard Gauckler

Philippe Gaspard Gauckler (born January 18, 1826 in Wissembourg ( Département Bas-Rhin ), † October 5, 1905 in Paris ) was a French civil engineer.

Gauckler studied in Strasbourg and in 1848 became a member of the Corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées . For this he was u. a. active in Marseille , Nancy and Bordeaux . A two-year stay in Spain was followed by a job in Colmar , where he became an engineer 1st class in 1868. In 1881 he became chief engineer, 1st class and director of the French state railways, in 1886 he was appointed inspector géneral des Ponts et Chaussées, the highest official of the corps.

The Gauckler-Manning-Strickler formula is named after him, a flow formula he developed in 1868 to calculate the average velocity of a flow.

In 1867 he was knight of the Legion of Honor , and in 1871 he was promoted to officer.

His son Paul Gauckler (1866–1911) became one of the archeology pioneers in Tunisia .
