Philippi is one of the largest townships in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality , South Africa . It is close to Cape Town Airport and officially had a population of 200,603 in 2011. In 2011, 79 percent of residents stated isiXhosa as their mother tongue. Philippi is in the west of the Cape Flats .
The township emerged in the 1980s as a settlement area for coloreds and is one of the youngest in the Cape Town region . Philippi is one of the poorest townships with the highest HIV rate (30 percent) in South Africa.
The southwest of Philippi consists of agricultural land and wasteland. Much of the vegetables needed in the metropolitan municipality are grown in the area.
Philippi has a stop on the Bonteheuwel Line of the Metrorail Cape Town .
