Phillip Wilcher (born March 16, 1958 in Sydney ) is an Australian composer and pianist .

Career

Early years

Phillip Wilcher started playing the piano at the age of eight. From a young age he was interested in composing his own works. With the help of J. Albert & Son , he published his first piano composition “Daybreak” at the age of 14, making him the youngest composer in Australia at the time.

Afterwards Wilcher was a student of the composer and musicologist Franz Holford , who was employed as an editor at J. Albert & Son , for seven years ; For 20 years both composed music together. His piano piece "Autumn Rain" was published by J. Albert & Son when he was 17 years old. Further studies led him to the pianist Neta Maughan and the composer Miriam Hyde , with whom he had a 30-year collaboration. In 1976 Wilcher became associate editor for the Classic / Education division of J. Albert & Son. During the 1980s he worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation .

The Wiggles and Early Musical Education

In 1991, while working on the Macquarie University early stage music program , Wilcher met Anthony Field , a former member of the Australian rock group The Cockroaches and child psychology student , who asked him to help him with the debut album for The Wiggles . Wilcher claims to be responsible for 75% of the music on the album, including the piano piece "Summer Dance", which he composed at the age of 14 and which is named "Archie's Theme" on the album is found. In 1992 Wilcher left The Wiggles. The spokeswoman for the music group Dianna O'Neill claims that Wilcher wrote a resignation letter because he was aiming for a career as a classical composer. The Australian Recording Industry Association later awarded all band members, including Wilcher, gold and platinum certificates for their debut album, which was a great success. In 1993 Wilcher published a lesson plan for early musical education entitled "A Musical Offering".

Later career

His career has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "a diverse mix of classic and nonsense". Phillip Wilcher has published over 100 piano works. He has composed music for pianist Aaron McMillan and musician and former ABC broadcaster, news anchor and journalist Clive Robertson . Wilcher also set texts by the American poet Jack Larson to music. His music has been recorded on various CDs by for example Wirripang and Jade Music . Wilcher's music is often broadcast by the two radio stations ABC-FM and 2MBS-FM . 2MBS-FM has also produced two documentaries about his artistic work, "Wilcher and the French Connection" and "Wilcher's World". In addition to composing, Wilcher also appeared as a solo pianist and in connection with various ensembles.

To commemorate the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , his piano piece “One Tuesday in September” was broadcast nationwide on the first anniversary of the tragedy.

Rita Crews of The Studio Quarterly Magazine describes his style as "free-flowing, with an underlying romantic character in which melodic lines and lyricism are very important elements". Mike Smith of 2MBS-FM attests his fourth studio album “Shimmer” an “even freer romantic character than in his earlier” works and associates his music with “Rachmaninov, Albeniz and even Brahms”.

He is an elected member of the Australasian Performing Rights Association and a board member of Australian Music Teacher Magazine , for which he has written articles on Chopin, Brahms and Ravel.
