The Philomycidae are a small family of nudibranchs from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). You no longer have any remains of the original housing.
features
The body is worm-shaped, it is stretched out to over 10 cm long. The types of the family have completely reduced the housing. But there is still an (empty) shell bag. The smooth coat extends over the entire back of the animals. The breathing opening ( pneumostome ) and the genital opening are located near the front end in a slot on the edge of the jacket. There is no keel, a mucous gland at the tail end is missing. The foot is set off from the coat by a pit. The sole is undivided, the jaw is streaky or ribbed, some species have a median protrusion. The penis is well developed and not divided, the epiphallus may or may not be present. There may be a love arrow sack that contains a small, conical love arrow. The atrium is not swollen.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The distribution area extends from the Far East of Russia , over Japan and China to Indonesia ( Java and Sulawesi ). In addition, the family occurs in North and Central America and in northern South America to about Colombia . The species in the family feed mainly on mushrooms .
Systematics
The family Philomycidae contains, depending on the author, about five to six genera with a total of just over 20 species and subspecies.
- Family Philomycidae J. Gray, 1847
- Genus Philomycus Rafinesque, 1820
- Genus Pancalyptus Pilsbry, 1948
- Genus Pallifera Morse, 1864
- Genus Megapallifera Hubricht, 1956 (originally proposed as a subgenus of Pallifera ; Schileyko (2007) does not recognize the genus. Used as an independent genus by Tsai & Wu (2008))
- Genus Meghimatium Hasselt, 1823
- Genus Granulilimax Minato, 1989
Phylogeny
After an initial preliminary molecular analysis of the relationships within the Philomycidae family, albeit with only a few taxa, Tsai & Wu (2008) determined that the family may be polyphyletic. The genus Arion , type genus of the Arionidae, lies in this cladogram within the family Philomycidae. However, the morphological data contradict these results.
