Philotas (Satrap)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philotas ( Greek Φιλώτας) was a Macedonian general under Alexander the Great and satrap of Cilicia .

Philota's family background is unknown. He is not to be confused with Philotas (son of Parmenion) , to what extent he could have been identical with the strategist Philotas cannot be established.

He took part in Alexander's campaign in Asia as a commander ( taxiarchos ) of a phalanx . He is probably identical to that Philotas who together with Ptolemy in 331 BC. BC received the order to capture the Bessus . In 323 BC BC he was entrusted with the governorship of Cilicia even before Alexander's death in Babylon , after Balakros had fallen there in the fight against the revolting Pisidians . In the following year Philotas received support from the army of veterans under Krateros that just passed through Cilicia on the home ass. After the news of Alexander's death in Babylon arrived at around the same time, most of the veterans hurried on to Macedonia.

Philotas was confirmed in the imperial order of Babylon by the imperial administrator Perdickas as satrap of Cilicia, but was already 322 BC. Relieved of office by Perdiccas and replaced by Philoxenus . The reason for this was probably his friendship with Krateros, who became an opponent of Perdiccas in the beginning of the first diadoch war.
