Phineas Priesthood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Phineas Priesthood ( English Phineas Priesthood , sometimes also Phinehas Priesthood ) is an anti-Semitic , racist , right-wing terrorist current of unorganized people within the Christian Identity or White Supremacy movement in the United States. Its ideology is largely based on the book Vigilantes of Christendom: The Story of the Phineas Priesthood , written in 1990 by the American right-wing extremist and Christian Identity supporter Richard Kelly Hoskins .

In Hoskins' work, the Phineas priests are described as god-called protectors of the divine order. This refers to the biblical figure of Phineas , who gave the group its name , who received God's praise and attention by killing the Israelite Zimri and his Midianite playmate Kosbi , who were guilty of idolatry, and thus restoring the God-given order.

Several serious crimes and attacks are attributed to the group, including a series of bombings and bank heists in 1996 in Spokane, Washington, and the shelling of several public buildings and attempted arson in Austin, Texas in 2014.
