Phloea subquadrata is a bug from the Phloeidae family that is found in the Neotropic ecozone.

features

The bugs have a flattened body with lobed and leaf-like extensions. The eyes are divided into a dorsal and ventral part. They also have tripartite antennae. In addition to the genitals, the sexes can be differentiated by the shape of the lobes on the head and the length of the trunk and scutellum .

distribution

The species occurs exclusively in the Mata Atlântica ("Atlantic Rainforest") on the east coast of Brazil. The distribution area extends from the south of the state of Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul .

Way of life

The habitat of the bedbug species is made up of semi-evergreen forests (English semi-deciduous forests ), which lie in the transition area between the damp coastal forests and the savannah vegetation inland. The bugs live on tree trunks of various myrtle plants (Myrtaceae) such as Campomanesia guazumaefolia , Campomanesia rhombea , Campomanesia xanthocarpa , Myrciaria jaboticaba and Eugenia cauliflora . Other host and fodder plants are myrobalans such as Terminalia kuhlmannii and milkweed plants (Euphorbiaceae) such as Sucurinega guaraiuva . They feed on the sap of their host plants. The bugs go through five nymph stages during their development. They spend the first nymph stage under the protection of their mothers on their underside.
