Phocas of Sinope
Phocas of Sinope ( ancient Greek Φωκᾶς ; † 117 or 303 in Sinope ) is revered as a Christian martyr .
Phocas is said to have officiated as bishop in the city of Sinope on the Black Sea , another tradition describes him as a gardener. According to legend, under Emperor Hadrian he was martyred by burning or beheading . He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches . His feast day is July 14th. Phocas is also the patron saint of boatmen.
A church consecrated in his name was the Phocas Church in Basufan , Syria , built at the end of the 5th century and later destroyed by fire .
