Roman Empire
- Quintus Aquilius Niger and Marcus Rebilus Apronianus are consuls in the Roman Empire .
- Under Trajan , the Roman Empire reached the greatest expansion in its history. On the way back to Rome from a campaign against the Parthians , however, he died on August 8 in Selinus . Hadrian , supposedly adopted by him on his deathbed, succeeds him as emperor on the throne. But it soon became apparent that Rome would not be able to hold the newly conquered territories. Hadrian gives up most of the territories in the east that Trajan conquered in the next few years. As early as 117 he gave the province of Mesopotamia back to the Parthians and moved the border to the Euphrates . The new emperor wants to limit himself to securing the existing and thus ends the expansive foreign policy of the Roman Empire for centuries .
- The Jewish diaspora uprising in the north African provinces of the empire is crushed after two years. When Alexandria is taken, the synagogue there is destroyed. Thousands of Jews are victims of retaliation.
