Phormidium is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria , or "blue-green algae". The type species of the genus is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont . The genus forms toxic secondary metabolites .

features

Phormidium grows in mats made of long, unbranched cell threads (filaments). These are surrounded by a thin, colorless jelly shell. Single cells are blue-green to purple in color. Hormogonies are formed for reproduction.
