Photomatix is software for creating HDR images. It was developed by HDRsoft for the operating systems Mac OS X and Windows (32- and 64-bit version).

The product has been available in two versions since the beginning of 2011. In addition to the normal version that had been sold until then , which is now called Photomatix PRO 5 , a function- reduced software called Photomatix Essentials 3.x (formerly called Light ) is offered at a significantly reduced price. The Essentials version has also been available in German since January 8, 2012.

A fully functional test version with no time limit is available on the website. However, a watermark will be added to the images as long as they are not licensed.

In contrast to software such as HDR Shop or Photosphere, Photomatix up to version 3.x used a tone mapping operator, which is difficult to configure for realistic results. There is criticism that this leads the user to abuse tone mapping as an artistic effect tool.

From version 4 it is possible to assign the number of processor cores to be used to Photomatix . In addition, after reading in the template images, you can select the following 12 different HDR creation modes via "Preset Thumbnails":

  • Enhancer (Default, Painterly, Grunge, Smooth, B&W)
  • Compressor (Default, Deep)
  • Fusion (Default, Adjusted, Auto, 2 Images, Intensive).

In addition, you can create your own presets.

With version 4.2 in April 2012, the selection of preset operators was significantly increased and the import of new RAW formats was considerably expanded (e.g. Canon S100, G1 X, Nikon D4, D800, Sony NEX-7, Panasonic GX1).

Version 5 was published on November 20, 2013 (previously only in English). The German version was published on March 3, 2014.
