The moths of Phyllonorycter comparella are small butterflies . They have a body length of 2.5-3 mm and a wingspan of about 8 mm. The front wings of the moths have a white basic color and are patterned with gray-brown speckles and spots.

Phyllonorycter comparella is widespread in Europe. Their occurrence ranges from the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily to the Baltic States and Finland as well as Bulgaria . The species is also represented in Great Britain , the European part of Russia and the Middle East .

Way of life

The species forms two generations per year. The adults of the summer generation are usually observed in August, those of the wintering autumn generation from October. Host plants of the moth species are the gray poplar ( Populus × canescens ) and the silver poplar ( Populus alba ), more rarely the black poplar ( Populus nigra ). The caterpillars develop in a mostly oval-shaped space mine on the underside of the leaves of their host plants. The mines do not cause the leaves to bulge. However, the upper side of the leaf is pale speckled in the area of ​​the mine. Eventually the caterpillar pupates in a cocoon.
