Pia Hellenthal

Pia Hellenthal (* 1985 in Bochum ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Pia Hellenthal grew up with her older cousin, the future actress Annina Hellenthal, in Bochum. In 2013 she graduated from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne with a diploma in media arts.

Hellenthal works as a director for both fictional films and documentaries. Her films have been shown at numerous festivals, some of which are international, including the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival , the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival , the Solothurn Film Festival and the Berlinale . Her short film Palim Palim won both the Prix HR Giger “Narcisse” for the best Swiss short film and the Prix Taurus Studio for the best film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival 2013.

Together with filmmakers and graduates from the Cologne Academy of Media Arts, Hannah Dörr , Visar Morina and Janis Mazuch , Hellenthal founded the Cologne film series Under the Influence in 2017 . The invited directors present their favorite films that have had a significant impact on them. Afterwards there will be an audience discussion.

For her debut film, the documentary Searching Eva , Hellenthal received the Gerd Ruge grant in 2016 . The documentary accompanies Eva Collé, who grew up in the age of the Internet and has been putting her life and self-search online since she was 14. The film was funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , BKM and the Goethe-Institut Lebanon and was released in cinemas on November 14, 2019. The Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland exhibited a spin-off installation of the film with the title anonymous asks in 2018 .

In addition to her own films, Hellenthal works for VICE magazine. For her work there she was u. a. Awarded the Pink Poodle for gender equitable advertising and nominated for the Lovie Awards.

A Woman Under the Influence by John Cassavetes and Wanda by Barbara Loden are two of Hellenthal's favorite films.

Pia Hellenthal lives in Cologne and Berlin.
