The Piaranthus are a genus of plants of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae , which is assigned to the family dog venom plants (Apocynaceae).

features

The genus Piaranthus includes small, stem-succulent forms with plagiotropic shoots and grass-like growth. The shoots are spherical or cylindrical (1–6 cm × 0.8–2 cm) with a square or pentagonal cross section. The very small (about 1 mm) leaves are triangular and fall off quickly.

The inflorescence develops on the side of the stems and includes one to ten flowers that open more or less simultaneously. The flower measures 6–42 mm in diameter. The five petals are star-shaped with free crown lobes or fused bell-shaped with short crown lobes. The corolla lobes are green on the outside, yellowish on the inside, creamy yellow, ivory to whitish with red or reddish brown spots or bands. They are bald, papillary or have short hair. The side crown is intense yellow.

The paired follicles each measure 6-14 cm in length and 4-8 mm in diameter and contain up to 130 seeds.

Occurrence

The occurrence of the genus is limited to Namibia and South Africa .
