Piccolomini is an impact crater to the east of the lunar front , south of Mare Nectaris , south of Fracastorius crater and northeast of Rothmann , at the southern end of the Rupes Altai . The edge of the crater is eroded with pronounced terracing , the interior is largely flat and has a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian astronomer, poet and philosopher Alessandro Piccolomini .
