The Naranjo de Bulnes (2518 m), also well known under its Asturian name Picu Urriellu , is by far the most important mountain in the Picos de Europa . The monolithic, limestone summit is striking from all sides. There are countless climbing routes through all four walls of the mountain, the easiest route leads through the south face and requires climbing at a level of difficulty V-.
The first ascent was made on August 5, 1904 by the Spanish politician Pedro José Pidal y Bernaldo de Quirós , Marqués de Villaviciosa, accompanied by the shepherd and mountain guide Gregorio Pérez Demaría , known as El Cainejo, from Caín de Valdeón in the province of León . They climbed through the north face on a route that is now known as Vía Pidal-Cainejo .
