Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire (born June 21, 1758 in Wassy , Kingdom of France , † March 8, 1817 in Paris ) was a French lawyer, statistics pioneer and cartographer .

Live and act

He was the son of Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire (1728-1803), adviser to the king, Procureur des Eaux et Forêts and Marie Thérèse Gantois (1737-1817). On April 26, 1787 he married Angélique-Emilie Vermeil (1769–1838) with whom he had two children: Angélique-Claire Chanlaire (May 10, 1788, Paris - September 9, 1877) and Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire (? - 23. December 1870, Cannes).

Little is known about his life. In 1780 he was an attorney at the Supreme Court of the Parlement de Paris . With the revolution he began to change his professional orientation and learned geography . At the beginning of the 19th century he worked in the administration of the Centrale des Eaux et Forêts , where after a few years he was entrusted with the cadastre . He created numerous important and noted maps, such as Carte d'Europe, dressée sur la méridienne de Paris or Carte géométrique des Routes de Poste de la République Française . From 1803 to 1807 he was director of the topography authority.

Honors

  • The rue Chanlaire in his hometown Wassy was named in his honor.
