Pierre Cousin (mathematician)
Pierre Auguste Cousin (born March 18, 1867 in Paris , † January 18, 1933 in Arcachon , Gironde Department) was a French mathematician .
Live and act
Pierre Cousin studied with Henri Poincaré and Paul Appell in Paris at the Sorbonne . In 1894 he received his doctorate. Then he was first a high school teacher in Caen and later a professor in Bordeaux .
Cousin dealt with the theory of several complex variables, where the task of constructing whole or meromorphic functions for given zeros and poles is called cousin problems . In his dissertation in 1895 he succeeded in expanding Weierstrasse's product theorem ( whole functions ) and the Mittag-Leffler theorem ( meromorphic functions ) from a complex variable to cylinder domains in complex dimensions. The solution to the cousin problems was achieved in the 1940s and 1950s by Jean-Pierre Serre , Henri Cartan , Karl Stein and Kiyoshi Oka .
