Pierre François Xavier Bouchard

Pierre François Xavier Bouchard (born April 29, 1772 in Orgelet (Jura); † August 5, 1822 in Givet , France) was the discoverer of the Rosetta Stone in the port of or in Fort St. Julien near the Egyptian city of Rašīd (French Rosette , Arabic : رشيد - Rashid) on July 15, 1799. At that time he was a lieutenant in Napoleon Bonaparte's army during the Egypt campaign. After the French defeat in Egypt, the stone was moved to the British Museum in London. Bouchard remained in the pioneering force until his death. He has received several awards (including the Legion of Honor ), but has also been captured three times. No picture of him is known.
