Pierre Goubert

Pierre Goubert (born January 25, 1915 in Saumur , † January 16, 2012 in Issy-les-Moulineaux ) was a French historian who dealt in particular with the 17th and 18th centuries (Ancien Régime). He belongs to the Annales School and wrote biographies about Louis XIV and Jules Mazarin .

Goubert went to school in Angers and studied from 1935 at the École normal supérieure de Saint Cloud and turned to history under the influence of Marc Bloch from the Annales School. In 1939 he was briefly called up, taught at high schools such as in Beauvais and on the side continued his studies with the Agrégation in 1948 and studied at the Sorbonne. From 1951 he did research for the CNRS , in 1956 became directeur d´etudes at the École pratique des hautes études and in 1958 professor at the University of Rennes . In the same year he received his doctorate under Ernest Labrousse (Beauvais et le Beauvaisis de 1600 à 1730). In 1965 he became a professor at the newly founded University of Paris X in Nanterre and in 1969 at the Sorbonne (University of Paris I). In 1978 he retired.

His book Louis XIV. And 20 million French about everyday life under Louis XIV. From 1966 became a bestseller, as did other of his historical works. In 1984 his Introduction to the History of France appeared.

He was visiting professor in Princeton, Montreal, Japan, Kingston in Jamaica, the Ivory Coast and Madagascar, among others. In 1978 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .

As the successor to Marcel Reinhard , he was President of the Société de démographie historique.
