Life

As the son of a noble family, he became a courtier and then a soldier and traveled to Italy , Scotland , Spain and Portugal . He later fought in the French Wars of Religion , but had an accident in 1584 when he fell from his horse so badly that he had to leave the service and began to write. He had a special friendship with Filippo Strozzi . His works, "Vies des hommes illustres et des grands capitains" and "Vies des dames galantes et des dames illustres" , did not appear until 1665. They vividly depict court life at the time of Brantôme and contain a myriad of historically evaluable gossip stories.
